Crowns and Bridges

Dental Crowns

Also known as dental caps, dental crowns are used to restore the look and function of teeth that have been weakened as a result of dental decay, old restorations or cracks. Dental crowns are like a thimble that covers the whole tooth and not only strengthens it but can change the shape and colour. Crowns may be made of various materials depending on the condition of the tooth, position in the mouth and the need for strength. Most crowns now use advanced materials technology and can be completely blended with natural teeth.

A root canal treated tooth involving significant loss in tooth structure normally requires a crown for protection. A missing tooth replaced by an implant is also restored with a crown.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is one method that is used to permanently fill a space created by a missing tooth (or teeth). Traditionally a dental bridge is made up of two crowns, one for each tooth either side of the gap, with a pontic (or fake tooth) joined to the crowns. This provides a permanent, aesthetic, and functional tooth replacement, which can be an excellent alternative to a removable denture or dental implant.
